Atomization of Microfibrillated Cellulose and Its Incorporation into Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) by Reactive Extrusion

The present study focuses on the preparation and characterization of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) films that were reinforced with cellulose microstructures to obtain new green composite materials for sustainable food packaging applications. atomization suspensions microfibrillated (MFC) successfully allowed formation ultrathin structures nearly 3 µm were, thereafter, melt-mixed at 2.5, 5, 10 wt % PHBV subsequently processed into by thermo-compression. most optimal results attained intermediate MFC content 5 %, however, showed a low interfacial adhesion biopolyester matrix. Thus, two reactive compatibilizers explored in order improve properties composites, namely multi-functional epoxy-based styrene-acrylic oligomer (ESAO) combination triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) dicumyl peroxide (DCP). chemical, optical, morphological, thermal, mechanical, barrier against water aroma vapors oxygen analyzed determine potential application these packaging. incorporation yielded contact transparent films, whereas extrusion TGIC DCP led composites enhanced thermal stability, mechanical strength ductility, performance vapor oxygen. In particular, this compatibilized film was thermally stable up ~280 °C, it an elastic modulus (E) above GPa deformation break (ɛb) 1.4%. Moreover, compared neat PHBV, its limonene improved nine times, respectively.
